Apprenticeships are work-based training courses that offer:
Working in hairdressing involves booking appointments, shampooing and cutting hair, mixing and applying hair colours and very good customer service. Successful hairdressing apprentices can go on to
Hairdressing is a busy, creative, fashion and people-centred industry. Those who typically succeed are creative and energetic individuals with artistic flair. You'll need excellent punctuality and attendance, good communication skills and enjoy meeting many different people.
Individuals aged 16 to 19 are usually funded by the government to do apprenticeships. If you're over 19 you can still do an apprenticeship but you'll have to find alternative funding such as employer sponsorship. Contact us if you need more advice about this.
You don’t need many formal qualifications but reasonable maths and English are required, as is the willingness to learn about hairdressing theory and practices. If necessary your training will be shaped to develop your skills in these areas. All training is planned to suit your individual needs, ability and learning preferences.
On a hairdressing apprenticeship you’ll be employed for 18 months to two years in a local salon, earning a salary whilst training. You’ll complete NVQ level 2 in hairdressing and “key” or “functional” skills qualifications which are essential for a successful hairdressing career.
You will attend our state-of-the-art training centre, usually for half a day a week. Training will include all aspects of hairdressing such as:
You may also undertake certified courses in subjects such as HIV awareness and equality and diversity. The rest of your working week will be spent on the job in your salon, learning practical skills from professionals.
As well as your qualifications you’ll gain strong interpersonal and practical hairdressing skills on an apprenticeship. You’ll have fun participating in hair shows, live demonstrations and hands-on activities whilst learning about respecting people and cultures. After your apprenticeship you’ll be a qualified hairdresser with the skills needed to work in a salon or in any other associated job roles.
Once qualified, we’ll offer you support and encouragement if you wish to progress onto one of our advanced courses such as the level 3 advanced apprenticeship or Level 3 NVQ in hairdressing. These qualifications will give you the advanced technical skills of the most successful hairdressers. Beyond this, if you’re interested in salon management or starting your own business we can help you progress to level 4 qualifications and higher education courses such as foundation degrees.
