Name: Laura Carter
Sector: Childcare

I am 23 and I work at St Michaels School, Liverpool. I used to work in a pub but my long term career aim was to become a nurse, so I was looking for the experience and qualifications which would get me into University. That’s when I turned to tpm with a little help from a friend who was already on a course with them.

I completed my Childcare apprenticeship with tpm and now I have progressed onto the advanced apprenticeship programme. I chose to undertake this qualification because I was working in a school and really enjoyed it so I decided to educate myself further in this area.

Within my role I am considered to be a teaching assistant in my setting. I have a key group of children in my responsibility and I am responsible for developing their life skills and keeping them safe. What I love most about my job is watching the children develop, knowing that I had a part to play in that. I can’t think of another job role that’s as rewarding and so much fun.

Everyone at tpm is so supportive; there’s a very big family atmosphere and I’ve always felt confident in all areas of my work. tpm is such a relaxed environment and all the staff are so friendly and caring to everyone. My teacher has helped me learn about things that I could not have learned through my work/setting so attending the theory classes is really important.

I have gained a lot of skills during the completion of my qualifications and these have had a very positive effect on the way I care for the children in my setting.

Anyone considering a course with tpm needs to make sure it’s the right career path for you and that you are confident and passionate about learning it.
