I am 19 years of age, and I work as a childcare practitioner in Liverpool. I am currently on a childcare level 2 Apprenticeship with tpm and I want to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship. I have a 3 year old child and we are expecting another soon.
Prior to starting my Apprenticeship I worked for McDonalds and I also attended Liverpool Community College to study music, but I have always wanted to work with children since I left school. I have volunteered a lot, working in youth centres and children’s centres and it was this work that led me to realise what I wanted to do most. tpm have been really helpful and supportive to me in becoming what I have always wanted to be and by helping me gain suitable qualifications for the role I am in.
Everything is great about my Apprenticeship; I think it’s really good the way we learn through experience of working in a real day nursery. The teachers at tpm are great and I am learning other subjects such as safeguarding, equality and diversity and paediatric first aid. They treat you with respect and you can have a laugh with your teacher while you learn; makes learning fun. My assessor is very friendly and helpful. If I have any issues or problems I can speak to her openly; she’s always there to answer any questions I have about my training or professional development.
My role within the nursery is to ensure that I am meeting all the children’s requirements and maintain health and safety. What I enjoy most about my work is doing activities with the children; I love it when you see a child/young person laughing and smiling because I know they are enjoying being in my company. I have gained many additional and practical skills such as communicating with parents and children, hospitality and how to co-operate with other staff and children.
Ultimately I want to go to university, study child psychology and open my own clinic.
