I am the Managing Director of Hopscotch Nursery and I first heard about training plus when opening the business in 2006, and my first employee was completing her level 3 qualification with tpm at the time. tpm were the first training provider I used for apprentices and they are still my preferred and most consistent training company. tpm help me to education my apprentices with level 2 and advanced level 3 childcare qualifications.
My business really benefits from this type of training because the training provides the chance to train employees to the Hopscotch standard; whilst they receive the underpinning knowledge needed for the foundations of the theory based childcare learning from tpm. When apprentices complete their qualification, the business gains a young person who has progressed socially and emotionally into the work- life ethos as an employee, aware of Hopscotch’s policies and procedures. Over the last 6 years I have trained 28 apprentices with tpm; 12 qualified at level 2 and 9 qualified at level 3 with a 73% overall success rate. With their support my deputy manager Chloe Randall progressed from a level 2 student to the deputy manager and is now in her final year of her BA Hons. at University. Jenny Rogan progressed to the pre-school manager from a level 2 student and is now doing an advanced qualification in management. What I value most about tpm is the free training not only the childcare training but the health and safety, first aid and food hygiene. The communication and support the business and the students receive from tpm helps the learner’s transition from school/college to adult work life.
tpm assessors visit learners regularly and keep myself and my colleagues informed of the student’s progress. The relationship with tpm’s assessors and management is strong. My opinions on the learners development is always valued, together we discuss areas the learner needs to focus on, therefore the assessor can support them to reach the level required. The reviews and comments from the assessors are shared and management are given the opportunity to comment. The learners are encouraged to check future appointments suit the needs of the business as well as themselves. This shows their commitment to both the student and the setting.
tpm work with the same aim as myself to support and help the learners achieve the high standard of behaviour and knowledge needed for a nursery practitioner, unlike some training companies who aim to just complete units when the learner is not ready for the responsibility of a qualified practitioner. Learners are not ‘spoon fed’ their qualification, but they are supported to reach the standards required. tpm show a true understanding of childcare and how important it is that practitioners have a true understanding of their role.
Three words that are best to describe tpm are professional, personal and supportive.
I would encourage any business owner or manager considering using tpm to go for it – visit tpm’s centre (they will make you welcome) tell them about your business needs and leave the rest to them. Keep them informed of any changes in business and ask for support with any issues, your working relationship will help business and the students.
