tpm share LLN best practice with the Netherlands

Hairdressing and Language Teachers from the Netherlands visit tpmOn Friday 25th November a group of 34 teachers and managers from the Netherlands who teach Hairdressing, English and Dutch (LLN), came to Liverpool to visit tpm.

The group visit was organised by Mieke De Haan, Education Policy Advisor in Life Long learning in the Netherlands and Rob Pheasant ‘Head of Skills for Life at LSIS UK – Learning and Skills Improvement Service’. Mieke and the group are from the ‘Netherlands Association of Vocational Education Training Colleges’, known as the ‘MBO Raad’.

The ‘MBO Raad’ represents all government funded colleges for secondary vocational education and training and adult training education in the Netherlands.

  • ‘BBL’ is their work- based route and 35% of learners use it, whilst 65% attend a school based route
  • The qualifications structure is going through major change due to parliamentary order
  • Mieke investigated other countries procedures for carrying out WBL and in England found we had a clear structure – awarding organisations and a core curriculum for LLN

Mieke De Haan, Paula Hayes and Claire CollinsAs an LSIS Lead Provider on the Language Literacy and Numeracy Programme in the UK and a Hairdressing Training Provider tpm was well-positioned to demonstrate a good practice model in WBL to support Mieke and colleagues in their quest to deliver a quality framework to learners that included employer engagement and quality LLN.

The content of the day was delivered by LLN and ESOL specialist Claire Collins and Director Paula Hayes and covered :

  • Awarding organisation and the role of an IV and an EV
  • How to achieve centre accreditation
  • Staff CPD
  • ‘the standards’ (LLN core curriculum and hairdressing)
  • The role of the employer
  • Interviewing a learner
  • Initial assessment
  • College delivery
  • Work based assessment
  • Documenting the above

The trip was very successful international exchange. tpm have gained 34 friends in the Netherlands and our twitter page has a very international feel.
