Employer Briefing - National Minimum Wage Rates for Apprentices

The low pay commission has introduced a National Minimum Wage (NMW) Rate for Apprentices. From 1st October 2010, employers are required to ensure that the appropriate NMW rate is paid to Apprentices aged 16 to 18 and apprentices aged 19 or over (in the first year of their apprenticeship). Employers working with tpm will already be paying Apprentices at least £95 per week and will probably not need to change anything, currently.

Apprentices: are learners signed to an official Government funded/part funded scheme with an approved training provider such as tpm. They MUST be paid at least the NMW (currently £2.50/hour) once signed to an ‘Apprenticeship Agreement’ and for the duration of that agreement. This includes time working as well as the time spent training both on and off the job and includes all time at college.

Other training: Young people who are in a training period of employment and not signed to an official Government Apprenticeship with an approved provider cannot be paid at apprentice rates. Similarly, Apprentices aged 19 or over who have already spent a year on their Apprenticeship must be paid at least the full NMW rate appropriate to their age.

Learners On Trial: During trial periods and any work completed outside of the dates covered by a signed ‘Apprenticeship Agreement’; learners must be paid at the NMW rate for their age, until they are officially signed to a Government approved scheme with a training provider.

Pay Increments: As Apprentices develop skills, most employers tend to increase wages - in fact; employers are free to pay above the NMW. Many of our employers already do and research shows that apprentices earn an average of £170 net pay per week.Pay and work rights logo
