Josh Fearon speaks to tpm staff about the meaning of Black History Month

As October approached Josh Fearon spoke to staff about their understanding on Black History Month and to ask why it’s such an important part of Liverpool’s culture.

Black History month probably means many different things to different people. Staff at tpm feel certain that it’s about remembering and celebrating the life, achievements and diversity of Liverpool’s black communities.

tpm’s Steph Owen: “I believe that Black history month is a great way of celebrating what the older generations of the black community have lived through e.g. Slavery etc. However I also believe that Black History should be celebrated regularly throughout the year”.

tpm’s Paul Harding: “…my opinion is it’s important that we understand and respect different cultures and their traditions; I am aware that the Liverpool Maritime Museum (free entry to all citizens) holds a series of events including performances, talks, music, dance, craft activities specifically about our ‘Black History’. I intend to pay a visit to the museum with my young daughter”.

tpm’s Lewis Ellison “…to me Black History means, looking back on those tragedies and events that occurred a long time ago, and remembering what the black community went through during those terrible times. I feel black history is still evolving today”.

Of course Liverpool is home to the International Slavery Museum, which opened its doors in 2007. Playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah wrote about the exhibit of history’s most famous black achievers, which includes some of the world’s most famous names. Of course Liverpool has a few of its own famous black achievers, so this month and throughout the year ahead let’s remember and celebrate together!
